Joint headaches This type of headache is a result of inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the mandible to the skull. Causes/triggers Joint headaches or temporomandibul is caused as a result of malocclusion and stress. Jaw clenching is also an important cause of joint headaches. * Pain similar to contraction of muscles * Painful 'clicking' sound in the jaw Treatment Relaxation is the best way to cope with joint headaches. Using relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises or listening to soft music can often help alleviate this pain. Biofeedback and use of bite plate can also help treat this type of headache. In some cases, correction of malocclusion may be required. Prevention You can use the same techniques used to treat joint headache to prevent the problem as well. Eyestrain headaches Eyestrain headaches are a result of poor eye health and vision problems. Causes/triggers Vision problems can lead to eyestrain headaches. Astigmatism and imbalance of eye muscles are some of the common causes of the problem. Symptoms * The pain is either frontal or bilateral * Pain varies directly with the eyestrain Treatment In order to treat eyestrain headaches, you need to correct the vision problem. Prevention Eyestrain headaches can only be prevented by treating the vision problem. Tension type headaches This is one of the most common types of headache and is particularly caused due to stress. Causes/triggers Tension type headaches are usually the result of emotional stress or depression. At times people also suffer from tension type headache when they are thinking too much. Symptoms * Dull pain * Non throbbing headache * Tightness of scalp or neck * Degree of pain remains constant Treatment Rest and relaxation is the best way to get rid of a tension type headache. Medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium can be used to treat tension type headaches. Alternatively, you could even use caffeine or ice packs for treatment. In some cases psychotherapy, biofeedback and antidepressants may also work as an appropriate treatment. Temporary use of prescription analgesics may be advised in some cases. Prevention Avoid stress and practice various relaxation techniques in order to avoid tension type headaches. Allergy headaches Am allergic reaction may be accompanied by a headache. Allergy headaches are the body's response to an allergen. Causes/triggers Allergy headaches are triggered to due to various allergens such as pollens or molds. Allergies due to food are not responsible for an allergy headache. Symptoms * Generalized headache * Nasal congestion * Watery eyes Treatment You can use Antihistamine medication to treat allergy headaches. Nasal cortisone related sprays or desensitization injections may also be used to treat the problem. Prevention There are no prevention methods for allergy headaches.
