Migraine without aura In medical terms, migraine can be described as a neurological syndrome where in the perceptions of the body change towards the external environment. Severe headache and nausea are most prominent traits of this headache type. Causes/triggers Symptoms * Severe headache * Pain on one side of the head * Nausea * Vomiting * Sensitivity to light and sound * Cold hands Treatment Applying ice over the area in pain may be helpful in relieving a migraine headache. Medications or analgesics that constrict the blood vessels can also help treat migraine headaches. You can also use nasal spray or combination products that contain caffeine to treat the problem. Prevention There are several medicines that can help prevent migraine headaches with aura. Some of these medicines include beta blockers, anti convulsant, calcium blockers and NSAIDs. Migraine with aura This is also similar to a normal migraine headache. However, the only difference between migraine without aura and migraine with aura is that the latter is accompanied with visual disturbances. In migraine without aura, the patient develops warning symptoms. Causes/triggers The causes of migraine headache with aura and migraine headache without aura remain similar. a migraine headache with aura may be caused due to certain foods, hormonal imbalance, excessive smoking or caffeine consumption or changes in the immediate environment. Symptoms * Pain on one side of the head * Nausea * Visual disturbances before the headache erupts * Numbness in the arm and leg prior to the headache Treatment You can treat migraine headaches with aura as soon as you notice warning symptoms such as visual disturbances or pain in certain body parts. Once the pain starts, you can use the same treatment as used for migraine headache without aura. Prevention Beta blockers, anti convulsant, calcium blockers and NSAIDs can be used to prevent migraine headache with aura. Tumor headache A severe headache type, tumor headache are caused due to tumors in the brain. Causes/triggers The cause of tumor that eventually results in a headache is usually unknown. Symptoms * Pain worsens with time * Projectile vomiting * Visual disturbances * Coordination problems * Seizures Treatment Tumors can only be treated if discovered at an early stage using surgery.
