Menstrual headaches Menstrual cycle in women is characterized by various hormonal fluctuations. This hormonal fluctuation can often be the cause of a headache. Menstrual headaches are not very severe and can easily be controlled. Causes/triggers Menstrual headaches are primarily caused due to variation in the estrogen levels in the body. * Pain is similar to that experience in migraine headache * Pain occurs shortly before or after menstruation Treatment You can use medications or analgesics that constrict the blood vessels to treat menstrual headaches. Nasal spray or combination products that contain caffeine can also be used. Prevention Using vasoconstrictors and/or anti-inflammatory drugs before the menstrual cycle can help prevent the problem. Hypertension headaches There are numerous side effects of hyperextension and a headache could be one of them. Extreme cases of hypertension may be accompanied with a headache. However, this condition is rare. Causes/triggers Sever levels of hypertension where the blood pressure is over 200 systolic and 110 diastolic can lead to hypertension headaches. Symptoms * Pain across the entire headache * Pain is severe in the morning * Pain reduces as the day progresses Treatment Treating the problem of hypertension is the only cure to hypertension headaches. Prevention In order to prevent hypertension headaches, keep the blood pressure level in control. Fever headaches Typically a fever is accompanied by weakness, fatigue and headache. Fever headaches are mild and ease down as temperature comes to normal. Causes/triggers A fever headache is primarily caused due to infection. The infection causes the blood vessels to swell resulting in a headache. Symptoms * Generalized headache * Accompanied with fever Treatment In order to treat fever headaches, you can use aspirin, acetaminophen, NSAIDs and antibiotics. Prevention None Arthritis headaches Arthritis can result in tension in ones which in turn can lead to a headache. Causes/triggers This type of headache exists in arthritis patients only. However, the exact cause of pain is unknown. Arthritis headache is caused due to inflammation of blood vessels in the head. Changes in the bones in the neck may also result in an arthritis headache. Symptoms * Pain at the back of head * Pain in the neck and adjoining area Treatment Anti inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants can be used to treat arthritis headaches.
